In 2005, World of Warcraft looks at one of the strangest events in MMO history: the Corrupted Blood event, an outbreak that spread from person to person and infected so many players (around four million) that it was used by real-world scientists to study the spread of the pandemic. Now a player has somehow brought the plague back to Stormwind, albeit with less severe repercussions.
The video was uploaded to the Classic Wow subreddit by u/Lightstruckx. It shows the familiar red flash of the Corrupted Blood debuff as it affects almost every player on screen. When this plague last struck, it left a trail of destruction spread across Azeroth. This game has no cure for this debuff, and it will hit the character with between 263 to 337 points of damage every two seconds.
As an illustration, a character who is fully equipped with attack level equipment will die in about 30 seconds. Lower level players didn’t even know what hit them. The Corrupted Blood incident was a big enough problem that it attracted mainstream attention — a rarity for video games in 2005 — but even so, the only fix Blizzard could implement was a hard reset that returned the game to a point before Corrupted Blood had been introduced.
Ironically, the Corrupted Blood incident is one of the examples that scientists and doctors use as a reference when studying the COVID-19 pandemic. This also planted the seeds for another pandemic-level event this year World of Warcraftheld just before the launch The Lich King’s Anger. This second (and intentional) illness lasted for six days before players started complaining that it was disrupting the rest of the game.
Player response to the reintroduction of Corrupted Blood has ranged from excited to annoyed, but it hasn’t gone viral. This experience is a nostalgic reminder (for some people) of the glory days of MMORPGs, when World of Warcraft is the most popular choice by a wide margin. It’s unlikely that Blizzard will bring this disease back, especially since the game has hard servers that only allow one death per character — but it’s nice to see a throwback to the things that made WoW so charming in the past.
